Correspondence of statesman Elbridge Gerry, including letters to his brothers Thomas Gerry Jr. and Samuel R. Gerry, and others, concerning shipments of supplies for the American forces in the Revolutionary War; correspondence regarding the war with France and Gerry's diplomatic mission to France; letters from Mercy Otis Warren concerning her historical writings; and correspondence with various political figures regarding Massachusetts and national politics, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, James Madison, and the War of 1812. Gerry's letters to his wife Ann Thompson Gerry and his son Elbridge Gerry Jr. describe social life in Washington during his term as Vice President. Correspondents include James Warren, James Sullivan, and Thomas Jefferson. Also included are papers of Gerry's father, merchant Thomas Gerry of Marblehead, Mass.; and two illustrated notebooks of sailing and navigating problems kept by Samuel Russell, 1706 and 1710.
